Grand Theft Auto has been around since 1997 but the early games were 2D top-down and not at all what people think of when they think of GTA. It wasn't until GTA III in 2001 that it became mainstream and became what people think of when they imagine GTA.
When Saints Row came along in 2006 it was seen as a poor man's knockoff of GTA. Early into the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 generation, we had yet to receive a GTA for that generation and GTA fans fantasizing about a GTA for that new generation had to settle for Saints Row for a while. At first it had yet to get settled in, find its voice, and decide on a flavor, but over the subsequent games it definitely defined itself, establishing its own unique personality and style. It never caught on as well as GTA but people did warm up to it over time and a fair number of players did get to like Saints Row very well.
The latest Saints Row was a reboot and heavily divisive. Even many series fans hated the reboot for deviating from what they came to know and expect from the franchise. In particular, they toned down a lot of the crudity. That alienated fans that came to love and expect that from the series. Personally, I generally enjoyed the reboot, though I do miss some of the flavor that was given up in favor of being more vanilla. The presumption from players is it was sanitized to be less offensive, to be more "woke." One of the things Saints Row does continue to do better is personalization. Saints Row gives us ridiculously more options to customize the appearance of our characters, our vehicles, and even our gangs.
As of this time, we are still waiting on GTA6. They've had us playing and have been re-releasing and updating GTA5 for fully ten years and counting.
