What was the first forum you joined?
For me it was back when I was a kid, a news site for children. It only opened for a little after school each day (like from 4 PM until 8), but you could post anytime and when it opened the staff would approve your message and it went through
I stayed on that forum for a good few years, even passed the age limit. I don't remember the reason now, I think I said to the admin I had no other source of news, and I was allowed to stay as long as I kept the language kid friendly
Site closed not long after I left which was a shame because I thought it was a nice forum

Shoot. I don't exactly remember. In my early days online I didn't really know what I was doing or have a plan. I kinda stumbled around looking for stuff to do. I think something like Newgrounds if that counts. Does anyone remember back before Google was where we went, when there was Yahoo or Altavista?

The first one I remember is Gamefaqs. I think there were others around the same time but I don't think they're still around and I don't remember what they were called.

I have to think back to 1995 or 1996; thereabouts. When I started dabbling I had no idea what to do or how to do it. All I really knew was "ww.com," as I once put it. I typed in names of things I was interested in into the address bar with a triple W at the front and a .com at the end and see what happens. I was a Nintendo fan so I went to Nintendo.com. They had a forum but I didn't like it very well. Sega was the enemy so we went to Seta.com and to their boards, which we liked better.
Sadly, I have to admit that I started as a troll. I trolled Sega threads. However, they had really nice, cool people. Sega threads allowed HTML and I asked how people were changing font colors, making links, et cetera. They taught me the first things I learned about HTML. I got to liking the people and grew out of being a troll.
So, officially I guess Nintendo forums were my first but really it was Sega threads.

I was 13 or 14 and I joined a big international marketing forum. I wanted to learn the ins and outs of digital marketing. I learnt a lot I have to admit.

Does anyone remember back before Google was where we went, when there was Yahoo or Altavista? I'm trying to remember what I used before Altavista. I think it was Webcrawler. I believe it had an image of a spider as a sort of mascot.

😲 Webcrawler.com still exists. I'm going to use it for nostalgia.

I don't remember any website names now but I did more chat rooms than forums back then. Chat rooms were live in real time rather than post and check back tomorrow. The problem with chat rooms is they were mostly sad lonely people looking for love or a hookup. I also remember Icq and Aim.

Chat rooms felt like bars just before last call - people desperately looking for anything they can go home with. I wonder if any still exist. I remember ICQ and AIM. I still remember my old ICQ ID number. It was seven digits and started with a 2 so it was at the low end. Later on as more accounts were registered numbers grew to eight and nine digits, as I recall. I was a relatively early adopter.

You joined a chat room starting off immediately by announcing your age, gender, and... I think location. People also frequently asked you to provide those. If someone says "A/S/L" or "ASL" they're asking for this information. Theoretically, chat rooms would be for discussion of stuff just like a message board, but live, but instead it was lonely people looking for love.
