I think he could better be described as an antihero.  I know "antihero" sounds like it means the opposite of the hero, or the villain, but really it's a hero that lacks typical heroic attributes.  Spawn is supposed to be a soldier for heck, but instead he goes around sort of playing the hero, but he doesn't feel like a typical hero.
