The very first book I remember reading completely myself was Charlie and the chocolate factory, because we did it as a school project. That imspired me to read matilda and the BFG.
I also loved the Famous 5, and later on in life really enjoyed the Secret garden

I use to read a lot of Steven King. It is probably still my favorite. The new It movie did a better job of replicating the novel, I think, than the TV series back in the 90s. There is part of it I don't think will ever be shown in any adaptation tho. I love King but not sure why he felt like writing that part.

As a kid I hated reading. In 9th grade, I think, we had to read Of Mice and Men, and after a while I realized I actually enjoyed reading it. I was into certain types of video games and figured I might like books in medieval fantasy types of settings and read some that sounded like they're along the lines of Dungeons & Dragons. I then read a series of novels by David Eddings; a dozen novels, 400 to 600 pages each, as I recall.
I read Stephen King, of course. I know the aforementioned scene and it shouldn't be discussed here.
I have the complete works of Shakespeare. I actually enjoy his work, generally, though his comedies do nothing for me. Back in school, if you'd have told me I'd willingly read Shakespeare, I'd figure you were crazy.

Someone trying to get a farm of rabbits, or something. Or they at least lived with rabbits I know Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and actually really enjoyed it. I also read the Scottish play as well, and in school a couple of kids did a play of a midsummer nights dream

The way I recall Of Mice and Men, you've got George looking out for mentally-impaired Lenny, and they can't hold down a job in one place because Lenny keeps getting into trouble because he doesn't know any better. They have to flee to another job on another farm, over and over, or else Lenny will be killed for horrible things he does by mistake. They have a shared dream of one day having their own place and Lenny wants to own rabbits. The book takes place at the latest farm they work for where Lenny once again gets them into trouble. There's a farmhand that's a real jerk and tough guy and a gal he's with but she's a flirt and messes with Lenny, who doesn't understand what she's doing. That gets them into hot water with the tough jerk. Lenny accidentally kills a puppy by petting it too hard, and then he's found out by the flirty gal. He panics and accidently breaks her neck. Once again they have to flee before they kill Lenny. George comes to the realization that it's hopeless, that Lenny is going to keep doing these things and the best thing to do is make it stop. George has to put Lenny down.

Wow that sounds dull. In school we had to read Great Expectations. If Valium could be taken visually it would be Great Expectations. I think we spent a month reading it. I pretended to read it but just daydreamed. That entire quarter's grades were based on that book and I failed that quarter but it was worth it not to read Great Expectations. The other quarters were good enough for me to pass the class. If inmates had to read Great Expectations in prison it would be called cruel and unusual punishment.

I was already a bit up there in years and would have needed to go back to school for a teaching degree. I don't know how well teachers are paid in the UK but in the US they're not paid all that well. I guess it's not bad for it not being the full year but it's not a lucrative job. Supposedly the state average (my state) isn't too bad but around this specific area I believe they get paid quite a bit less than the state average.
