This is perhaps more baffling than skyquakes, also known as mistpouffers or Guns of the Seneca. Skyquakes are unexplained booms similar to a cannon or distant thunder. Sky trumpets aren't a brief sound but can last a while, and their sound is metallic and seemingly unnatural. strangesounds.org/strange-sounds#

No. I can't find enough information about it, either. My best guess is it's produced through some kind of interaction between our magnetosphere and solar weather, sort of like what produces the aurora, but I only have a layman's understanding of such things.

Thats down right creepy. They seriously dont know whats causing it? It's awfully creepy, and now I'm fascinated. I want answers. Part of me wants to hear it out of curiosity but part of me hopes I never hear it because I don't want to crap my pants.

They are small meteors entering the atmosphere, so you hear a sonic boom. They are small so they generally burn up before they hit the ground.

That would work for the brief booms but I don't think it would account for the shrill metallic screeching that can go on, as near as I can tell, for several minutes at a time.

Oh that, what you're hearing is doubtless a witch flying on her broomstick.
