www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/12/20/texas-black-panther-photo/71988291007/I'm not from Texas but in our state we also don't officially have panthers but many people have seen them, including myself. My parents and siblings have had several encounters with at least one (not sure if it's always the same one or different ones.) I saw what I thought was one but didn't get a good look at it as it hussled across a tall grassy field, bounding across it like a house cat but bigger. On another occasion a friend and I saw one sitting beside the road as we both drove by in separate vehicles and couldn't wait to ask each other if we both saw the panther. His mother observed one with binoculars at close range from her window for an extended period of time; enough to be fully confident in it being a panther.

Where I live we have mountain lions and I think Texas has the same animals we do. I don't know anyone here that ever claimed to see big black cats though. Maybe if a mountain lion was born black instead of light brown but I never heard of it happening. As far as I know they're only light brown. Maybe someone had a panther in captivity and released it.

Maybe someone had a panther in captivity and released it. That's how Florida got pythons

i never saw them but ive heard older generations talk about them being here. the panthers i mean. In my area, old timers called them "painters" because they pronounce a lot of words badly and make up words. Yins sawl a painter down by the crick in the holler. Translation: You guys saw a panther down by the creek in the hollow.

I never seen one but people say we have panthers. Than again they also act like we still have wolves around where I live and I dont think thats true so who knows.
