I honestly never really think about checking in on them but in Nintendo's online store they always have icons you can get. There's pictures, backgrounds, and borders you can use for your custom avatar. They often have special ones for a limited time, and if you miss them you can't get them later.

According to this, they're bringing some back for limited runs so you can get some you missed before. Here's the schedule.

Wario Ware: Move It!: December 25th and January 1st
Metroid Prime Remastered: December 26th and January 2nd
Fire Emblem Engage: December 27th and January 3rd
Detective Pikachu Returns: December 28th and January 4th
Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe: December 29th and January 5th
Pikmin (Pikmin 4): December 30th and January 6th
Super Mario RPG: December 31st and January 7th
