What are our thoughts on the butterfly effect? It's the principle that a tiny thing can have a large, far reaching effect, like a butterfly flapping its wings here causes a typhoon on the other side of the world. I've heard plenty of people laugh it off as preposterous. Is it though?

People like to hate the movie The Butterfly Effect and mock it for unbelievability, but the only unbelievable part is where the main character is able to mentally reach back to his past and change what he says or does. The part about slight changes having huge, far-reaching effects is very real. People don't like to believe that even trivial moments can have huge consequences, but I've seen it in my own life experiences.
As an example, my late childhood friend started working at a restaurant while I was in college and he made a casual comment suggesting I should start working there. I had no interest in doing so and wouldn't have thought about it had he not said anything about it, but as a consequence of his comment I applied to work there. While working there I met a woman I never knew before and would likely have otherwise never met because we had no people or lifestyle in common. We ended up dating and then married, and then had two children. My children's entire existence traces back to an off-hand comment my friend made. There's no way he could have known a random sentence could have changed the entire course of my life and resulted in the existence of two whole people.

I feel like that's a strong argument nobody can realistically oppose.

This is a strong argument for the true existence of the butterfly effect. We see historic examples where small things could have changed the world. The Academy of Fine Arts rejected Adolf Hitler's application twice. Imagine how different the world would be if Hitler had went to art school and pursued a life as an artist instead of a dictator plunging the world into a war that cost countless lives, and the atrocities of the concentration camps. The Chernobyl disaster released 400 times the radiation of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Had it not been for the heroic actions of three men, it could have been far worse. By giving their lives to go into contaminated water to close valves to prevent a second explosion, they prevented a larger disaster that would have rendered half of Europe uninhabitable for at least 500,000 years.

I wonder how the world would be today if Hitler had been an artist instead of a dictator that to this day is the poster child for evil and atrocities. One little tweak and the whole world could be unrecognizable.

One little tweak and the whole world could be unrecognizable. It's really hard to say. Something major might still have happened, as Hitler was only part of the picture. Germany was just one part of the Axis powers. Maybe it wouldn't have escalated to the same extent but the stage was still set for a lot of it.
