I don't agree with capital punishment. What if we execute someone and then find out they were actually innocent? We can't unkill them.

I feel like this is one of those gray areas. Interestingly, I'm locally seen as liberal and liberals are seen as against capital punishment, but I'm for it, though admittedly it's got its issues, but some conservative friends, that are typically assumed would be for it, are against it.
I feel like a murderer sitting in prison for a few decades is like "go sit in a corner and think about what you did." What are we trying to accomplish in this? Are we expecting someone that didn't value human life to think it over and eventually decide other people's lives have value and it's wrong to hurt them? That's I suppose technically possible but I don't count on it. As long as they're alive there's a chance of them escaping, or perhaps a legal loophole getting them freed, or simply after serving time they are out and can murder someone again. If we let them live, we gave them that chance.
"But maybe they wouldn't murder again." If we're going to gamble with lives, I'd rather it be the one that already took a life and proven themselves more than capable, versus gambling with innocent lives that could become the next victim.

I don't know. I just feel like "you kill someone we kill you" is a bit medieval.

bible says an eye for an eye. tooth for a tooth. That's also 2000 years old. I'd like to think we've grown as a society in the past 2000 years.

bible says an eye for an eye. tooth for a tooth. People seem to commonly misunderstand this passage. It's not speaking of revenge, payback, justice or whatever by saying if someone does wrong then wrong them back equally. It's not saying that if someone knocks your tooth out they need to lose a tooth to make things even. It's a limitation. It's saying no more than this for this, and no more than that for that. So, if someone robbed you of $100, according to this verse you don't have to take $100 back from them, but instead take no more than $100 back.
